Site très complet. ==> Macao est situé au sud de la Chine, sur la mer de Chine méridionale, sur la rive ouest du delta de la rivière des Perles. Le territoire est frontalier de la province du Guangdong. Il s'agit d'une région densément peuplée et fortement ouverte aux investissements extérieurs. Hong Kong se trouve de l'autre côté du delta, à environ 70 kilomètres. Canton est situé un peu plus en amont, à environ 150 kilomètres .

Today, with 66 stone steps leading to the facade, the ruins of the church are Macau's most famous tourist site.
Built from 1582 to 1602 by the Jesuit Order, St Paul College Cathedral was the largest Christian church in Asia at the time, and the royalty of Europe vied with each other to bestow upon the Cathedral the best gift.
The first Jesuits arrived in Macau around 1563. As educators, they started a school which was soon upgraded to an University in 1594. This was the first western university in South East Asia.Students studied Latin, Greek, local languages, music, painting, humanities rhetoric philosophy and theology.
Great scholars like Matteus Ricci and Ruggieri were early protagonists of St Paul College.

=>> extrait /----The Cathedral of Macau has a very long history. First built in 1576, it was originally a samll wooden structure. In 1849, local catholic parishioners collected donations to rebuild the church. The new cathedral covered the same size it has today. A year later, on 14 February 1850, the then Bishop Jeronimo Jose da Mata, consecrated the church and administered the first Holy Mass.
However, the cathedral was almost destroyed in a typhoon 24 years later.
The Cathedral was finally rebuilt in 1937 in concrete. This is how it appears today. Rebuilding at that time cost MOP100,900.
The Cathedral is built on the site of the first church of Our Lady of Hope of St. Lazarus. That church was the mother church of the Macau diocese which then included the religious provinces of China, Japan, Korea and other islands adjacent to China.
Left: The main altar. Behind the altar there is still large space for people. From here you can appreciate the stainglass windows. Right picture: the side chapel dedicated to Christ the King. Behind the modernist altar is a good stainglass representation of the Christ the King.
macauMany of the major events in the Church's calendar is centered on the Cathedral. During Easter, there is the procession of Our Lord of Passion between the Cathedral and St Augustine. Then there is a solemn parade on Good Friday that goes around Senado Square.
Special candle light Easter Vigil Masses, like in all other churches, are held here.
Services are held everyday, early morning and late afternoon. Sunday services have very good choirs.
The architecture is quite simple, like a basilica plan with no columns in the middle. Very well lit by several clerestory windows and bright skylights on the side altars or chapels..

=>> extrait /----The Church of Sto. Domingo is one of the most beautiful churches in Macau. You will never miss this yellow and green Church right in the middle of Leal Senado plaza of Macau. It is along a junction of a street and an alleyway bearing the same name.
Sto. Domingo is a baroque Filipino style church built by the Spanish Dominican friars in the mid 16th century.
Walkway on the right of the church which leads to the sacristy and the Sacred Museum on the upper floors.
They also built next to the church a monastery which does not exist anymore.
The painting of Chinnery at the right shows the plaza in front of the church. This plaza used to be the marketplace.

About St. Dominic
Founder of the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominican Order; born at Calaroga, in Old Castile, c. 1170; died 6 August, 1221.
His parents, Felix Guzman and Joanna of Aza, undoubtedly belonged to the nobility of Spain, though probably neither was connected with the reigning house of Castile, as some of the saint's biographers assert. Of Felix Guzman, personally, little is known, except that he was in every sense the worthy head of a family of saints. To nobility of blood Joanna of Aza added a nobility of soul which so enshrined her in the popular veneration that in 1828 she was solemnly beatified by Leo XII.
The example of such parents was not without its effect upon their children. Not only Saint Dominic but also his brothers, Antonio and Manes, were distinguished for their extraordinary sanctity.
Antonio, the eldest, became a secular priest and, having distributed his patrimony to the poor, entered a hospital where he spent his life minis ministering to the sick.
